It has taken me a while to find non-toxic laundry products that actually work, or are functional for our laundry room. If you would like to see my small laundry room makeover, you can find that here. That is what has inspired me to share my personal favorite laundry room essentials. Since then, I have added and changed out a few laundry products, and feel like our laundry system finally works really well for us!
These laundry essentials are a mix of items for storage and organization, products I use for our laundry, and things I keep in the laundry but use throughout the entire house as well.

Wool Dryer Balls
These wool balls reduce drying time, saving you money on your energy bill over time! They also soften clothes naturally and help reduce wrinkles.
To add a scent to your clothing without using toxic products such as dryer sheets, you can just add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to each ball. For a large load, I use 6 wool balls.
Essential Oils
I like keeping my essential oils in my laundry room because I use them for my wool dryer balls. They are a great alternative to fragrances that are added to toxic detergents!
Side Note: If you are using essential oils on dryer wool balls for baby clothes, be sure to do your research as to what oils are safe for little ones (some can be very toxic!)
Distilled White Vinegar
I use white vinegar as a natural fabric softener. If you look into non-toxic fabric softeners, you will notice that many of them are vinegar based. I have decided to save a few dollars by just using regular white vinegar. No, it does not make my clothes smell like vinegar (if you are wondering). By the time my laundry has gone through the dryer, it smells like the essential oil blend I use in my wool dryer balls.
Vinegar works by removing mineral buildup. It also helps prevent static AND it’s antimicrobial! Theres just great benefits to using vinegar all around! I use it by adding half a cup to load during the final rinse cycle.
Molly Suds Laundry Detergent
I have been on the hunt for a non-toxic laundry detergent that ACTUALLY works for a while now! With many of them, I have found that the laundry was either coming out with a faint smell still lingering or with stains still remaining.
This laundry detergent works the best in my opinion!
Borax
Borax is great to use for extra soiled items such as towels and rags as it helps boost the cleaning power of laundry detergent AND it helps soften the fabric too!
I also like to use borax when I am stripping my sheets and towels in the bathtub.
Dye-Trapping Sheets
This is a total must-have if you want to save the color of your clothes. If you have read my post on laundry tips you know that I talk about washing similar fabric textures rather than colors and this is how I am able to do that without the dark and bright colors bleeding onto lighter clothes.
These sheets catch any loose dyes in the washer and trap them by using positively charged ionic compounds (I know that sounds complicated… but it works!)
Storage Baskets
These are the storage baskets I use in our laundry. I use one for loner socks, one for cleaning rags and squeegees, one for miscellaneous laundry supplies that I only use on occasion, and one for our handheld steamer and iron.
I also love these cream-colored ones from target!
Laundry Hamper
When it comes to laundry hampers, I really like these inexpensive ones from Amazon. I purchased three to separate the lighter fabrics from heavier fabrics, and then one for towels and rags.
With three laundry hampers, I love that everything is already sorted so I just throw in laundry from whatever hamper is getting fuller.
Laundry Mesh Bags
Mesh bags are great for filling up with socks so that they are all in one place when your load is finished. I also use them for delicate items such as bras, underwear, and tights. This prevents them from getting any lint or small tears.
Steamer
A steamer is another must, in my opinion! I like it so much more than ironing. It’s fast and easy, AND you don’t have to pull out the iron board. There are occasions when I have to use the iron, but we definitely get more use out of the steamer!
Iron
This is just a basic laundry staple. Although it does not get too much use at our home, some things do better with ironing than with a steamer, such as dress pants.
Fabric Shaver
If you want your sweaters to look new longer, this is a total must!
I like to keep our fabric shaver in the laundry, and when I am folding clothes and notice lint, I go ahead and shave it before putting it away into the closet. That way it looks nice and is ready to wear when I take it out.
Wall-Mounted Broom-Holder
There are many different types of wall-mounted broom organizers that you could on Amazon. I personally went with this one because I only had one broom and one mop to hang up in our laundry.
You could use this in the pantry or wherever you store your mops and brooms, but ours is in the laundry room which is why I included it here.
Clear Jars
You can totally live without this, BUT if you want your laundry room to look nice and be more functional, looking into some clear jars is a good idea. It just makes things so much more convenient if you store your powdered laundry products in them. Just fill them up and place a scooper in there. That way it is easy to access and you don’t have to pull out the box or bag when you need it.
Thanks for stopping by! That is it for my current favorite laundry products that have made doing laundry so much more enjoyable and convenient. If you have an item that you believe is a laundry room essential, feel free to let me know in the comments! 🙂
